Everything else at the top of the filter, the knob, the washer, the e-ring and the head o-ring, works off that one piece of steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhen to replace it\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIf the threads are stretched, the rod is bent, or corrosion has thinned it, the head stops seating square and the filter starts weeping at the joint. Tightening the knob harder only makes it worse.
