They are slotted so that filtered water can pass through into the standpipe while the sand bed stays where it is. That slot width is the whole design. Once a lateral cracks or a slot opens up, sand runs straight through the filter and comes back into the pool through the returns.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFitment and installation\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis lateral measures 5-11\/16 inches long by 7\/8 inch in diameter and threads in with a 3\/4 inch MPT connection. Length, diameter and thread all have to match, so check all three against the one you removed. While the sand is out and the hub is exposed, look over every lateral in the set rather than only the one that failed.
