On the suction side of the system that joint is holding vacuum, not pressure, so a ring that has hardened or taken a set pulls air into the pump instead of dripping water out. The result looks like a priming problem: bubbles in the lid, a basket that never fills, weak flow at the returns.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhen to change it\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAny time the pump is opened. The backplate has to come off to reach the shaft seal, and a used o-ring that has spent years compressed in its groove will not reseat the way a fresh one does.
