The bump handle on top is stroked up and down, and that motion travels down the bump shaft into the filter, shaking the DE off the flex tubes and spreading it back on evenly. That bump cycle is the whole maintenance routine, which is why a failed shaft takes the filter out of service.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat usually goes wrong\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo things. The shaft itself wears or bends so the bump no longer moves the internals properly, and the o-ring on the shaft hardens and lets water weep out around the handle.
