The volute clamps against it, the motor bolts through it, and it carries the stationary half of the pump shaft seal. Everything about how well the pump holds water depends on that plate being flat and uncracked.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhen it needs replacing\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA hard freeze is the usual killer, and so is running for months with a shaft seal that leaks, because the water works at the plate and the bolt bosses. Once it is cracked or distorted, a new shaft seal will not seal against it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDo it once\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFit a new shaft seal at the same time.
