Rather than let that happen to the motor shaft, these pumps carry a sleeve over the shaft as a sacrificial surface. When it grooves or scores, the sleeve comes off and a new one goes on, and the shaft is untouched.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDoing the job once\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eReaching the sleeve means taking the pump apart, which is also what it takes to reach the mechanical seal, the impeller gasket and the retaining ring. Commercial pumps run long hours, so if the sleeve is worn the seal usually is too.
