Everything it holds is debris that never reaches the impeller, the seal or the filter, which is why a pump basket is the cheapest protection on the pad.

When to replace it

Baskets go brittle and crack around the rim and the handle, and a split anywhere in the mesh lets debris straight through to the impeller. A basket that has been crushed or has warped out of round restricts flow even when it is empty, which shows up as lower pressure at the filter and weaker returns. Neither problem is worth living with, and the basket costs a fraction of the impeller it protects.
