About Pool Leaf Nets

Leaf nets for round, oval and rectangular pools, ordered by the size of the pool rather than the size of the net. A leaf net is not a winter cover and does not replace one: it is woven mesh that sits on top of the cover through leaf fall and lifts off with the leaves in it, which is the whole point of owning one. Our inground nets are cut 5 ft larger than the pool, 2.5 ft on every side, the same as an inground winter cover, so the tubes that hold one down hold the other.

Does a leaf net replace a winter cover?

No, and this is the thing worth getting straight before you buy one. A leaf net is woven mesh. Water, dirt and daylight go straight through it, so on its own it keeps almost nothing out of the pool. It is a catcher that sits on top of the winter cover for the few weeks the trees are dropping, and its job is to save the cover underneath from ever being scraped clean. Cover first, net on top, both ordered for the same pool.

When do I take the leaf net off?

Once the leaves stop falling, and before the first real snow. Leave it on and the wet leaves trapped in the mesh break down through it onto the cover and stain what they land on, and a net full of soaked leaves with snow on top is a load the cover was never built to take. Pull it off by folding it over itself as you go, so the leaves travel with the net instead of tipping onto the cover you were protecting. In a climate that never really gets snow the timing is looser, but the leaves still rot.

What size leaf net do I need?

The one cut for your pool, not for your cover. Our inground nets run 5 ft larger than the pool, which is 2.5 ft of overlap on every side and the same cut as an inground winter cover, so a 20 by 40 ft pool takes a 25 by 45 ft net. The round and oval nets are listed by the pool they fit. Do not stretch a small one to make it reach: the overlap is what the tubes or the cable hold on to, and a net pulled tight has nothing left to grip.

How is the net held down?

The same way the cover under it is. On an inground pool that means water tubes laid round the edge on top of the net, so one set of tubes holds both. On an above ground pool it is the cable and winch through the grommets. Nothing new to buy, and when the net comes off in November the tubes go back on the cover alone.

Is a leaf net worth it if I only have a few trees?

It depends less on how many trees than on what is under the cover. Leaves that land on a solid cover sit in the rainwater on top of it and stain, and leaves that reach a mesh cover drop their fine debris into the pool to be opened in spring. If your cover ends the season needing a hose and a brush before you can fold it, a net pays for itself in one autumn. If it comes off clean, you do not need one.
