Questions about Pool Equipment

What order does it all go in?

Follow the water and it is always the same. Out of the pool through the skimmer and the main drain, into the pump, which is the only thing pushing; through the filter, so everything downstream sees clean water; then the heater, which must never be first because debris would run through the exchanger; then the sanitizer, whether that is a salt cell or a chlorinator, so nothing concentrated sits against the heater; and back to the pool through the returns. When something is plumbed out of that order it usually explains the fault.

Which piece do I replace first if the budget is limited?

The pump, almost always, and for two reasons rather than one. It is the thing that runs, so it is the thing that costs money every day, and a modern variable speed pump is the single largest change you can make to what a pool costs to own. It is also the machine everything else depends on: a filter cannot clean and a heater cannot heat if the flow is wrong. A filter that is merely old still filters. A pump that is failing takes the rest with it.

Can I mix brands on one pad?

Yes, and most pads already do. The plumbing between machines is standard PVC and the fittings are common sizes, so a Pentair pump in front of a Hayward filter is an ordinary sight. The one place it stops being free is automation: a control system talks properly to its own maker's pumps, heaters and salt systems, and a mixed pad usually means the controller switches the odd one out as a dumb relay rather than commanding it. If automation is the plan, pick that first and let it decide the rest.

How do I know what size to buy?

Size to the pool and to each other, in that order, and resist buying big. The filter is matched to the pool's volume and how hard it is worked, the pump is matched to the filter's design flow and the pipe it has to push through, and the heater is matched to the surface area and how fast you want it warm. A pump larger than the filter can pass does not clean faster, it runs at higher pressure and wears everything. Every category page here carries its own sizing answer.
