Side mount
The valve bolts to the side of the tank rather than the top. That keeps the filter shorter overall, which matters on a pad where there is a roof, a fence or a wall close above the equipment.
Living with a sand filter
Sand filters hold their media in the tank and trap debris as water passes through the bed. Cleaning is done by turning the valve to backwash and letting the reversed flow carry the dirt out to waste, so there is no cartridge to pull and hose down. The media itself lasts for years before it needs changing.
