Product details

The Hayward W3S166T is a Pro Series 16 in. top mount sand filter with a 1.5 in. multiport valve, rated for a flow rate of 35 gpm.

What it does

Water passes down through a bed of silica sand inside the 16 in. tank, which has 1.4 square feet of filtration area, and the top mounted valve directs flow through the filter, backwash, rinse, waste, recirculate, and closed positions. The tank is molded polymeric with an injection molded thermoplastic mounting base, and the filter uses 360 degree self-cleaning slotted laterals installed in a ball joint assembly to spread flow evenly across the sand bed.

Sizing and setup

The W3S166T is rated for a maximum working pressure of 50 psi and needs about 100 lbs of number 20 silica sand, sized 0.45 to 0.55 mm, to fill the bed. Turnover is rated at 14400 gallons in an 8 hour period or 21600 gallons in a 12 hour period, and the filter needs about 18 in. of open space above the tank to service the valve.
