Product details

The CaliMar CMARVSP3.0 is the 3 HP model in CaliMar's CMARVSP variable speed line, for inground pools. It runs on 230V single phase at 50 or 60 Hz, can be set anywhere from 450 to 3,450 RPM, and has 2 in. ports on both sides.

Motor and pump

CaliMar fits a totally enclosed, fan cooled (TEFC) premium efficiency variable speed motor. The volute and the strainer pot are one piece, which CaliMar says cuts hydraulic noise, and the lid is see-through, so the basket can be checked without opening the pump. The controller sits in a rain and UV proof enclosure rated IPX6, and the pump is ETL listed for the US and Canada.

Controls

The keypad on the pump sets a clock, a daily schedule of four speeds, a Quick Clean run and the priming speed, and the clock holds for a week through a power cut. Out of the box it runs 3,000 RPM for 2 hours from 8 am, then 1,500 RPM for 10 hours, 2,500 for 2 and 1,000 for 4. CaliMar's guide describes no speed inputs for an automation panel on this model, so a timer or relay can switch its power but not choose its speed.

Before you buy

At 3,450 RPM it moves about 105 GPM at 50 feet of head, read from CaliMar's performance curve. It draws 10 A on a 230V circuit, and CaliMar asks for a licensed electrician and a GFCI. The warranty is one year on materials and workmanship for the original buyer in residential use: commercial use voids it, and labor is not covered.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

How many GPM does the CaliMar CMARVSP3.0 move at 50 feet of head?
About 105 GPM at full speed, 3,450 RPM, read from CaliMar's curve for the CMARVSP3.0; at full speed with no flow the curve starts at about 85 ft of head. A variable speed pump spends most of the day slower than that, where flow and head both fall, and CaliMar's guide draws curves for 3,100, 2,500 and 1,500 RPM as well.
How many amps does the CaliMar 3 HP variable speed pump draw?
10 A, on 230 V single phase at 50 or 60 Hz, by CaliMar's model table for the CMARVSP3.0. The smaller sizes draw less: 5.5 A for the 1 HP, 7 A for the 1.5 HP and 8 A for the 2 HP. CaliMar has it wired in permanently through a circuit breaker, a two pole timer or a two pole relay, on a circuit with GFCI protection.
Is the CaliMar CMARVSP3.0 covered by warranty on a commercial pool?
No. CaliMar's limited warranty covers its variable speed pumps for one year against defects in materials and workmanship in residential use, and says any commercial application voids it. It runs from the date of purchase for the original retail buyer at the original site, is valid in the United States only, and does not pay for labor or shipping.
How big is the CaliMar CMARVSP3.0 pool pump?
23.82 inches long, 10.63 inches wide and 13.31 inches high, by the drawing in CaliMar's guide, with 2 inch suction and discharge ports. CaliMar asks for a straight run of suction pipe at least five pipe diameters long ahead of the inlet, so a valve, elbow or tee sits no closer than 10 inches to the pump on 2 inch pipe.
