Product details

The CaliMar CMAR15VS1.5 is the 1.5 in. port version of CaliMar's variable speed inground pool pump, covered by the same installation and user guide as the CMARVSP models. It takes 230V single phase at 50 or 60 Hz, runs from 450 to 3,450 RPM, and has 1.5 in. suction and discharge ports.

Motor and pump

CaliMar rates it at 1.5 HP maximum continuous load and 5.5 A. Its parts list gives it the same motor, motor drive and impeller as the 1 HP CMARVSP1.0, in a pump housing with 1.5 in. ports in place of 2 in. The motor is TEFC (totally enclosed, fan cooled) and premium efficiency, the volute and strainer pot are one piece, the lid is see-through, the controller enclosure is rated IPX6, and the pump is ETL listed for the US and Canada.

Controls

The keypad holds a clock, a four speed daily schedule, a Quick Clean run and the priming speed, and the display steps through speed, time, time remaining and watts. CaliMar's guide describes no speed inputs for an automation panel, so a timer or relay can switch its power but not set its speed.

Before you buy

Read from CaliMar's curve, it moves about 60 GPM against 50 feet of head at 3,450 RPM. CaliMar recommends suction piping at least as large as the return line, and larger pipe where possible. It draws 5.5 A at 230V and is wired in permanently by a licensed electrician on a GFCI protected circuit. CaliMar's one year warranty covers materials and workmanship in residential use for the original buyer; commercial use voids it and labor is excluded.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Is the CaliMar CMAR15VS1.5 the same pump as the CMARVSP1.0?
Largely. CaliMar's parts list gives the CMAR15VS1.5 and the CMARVSP1.0 the same motor (FB2010-M), motor drive (FB2010-MD) and impeller (FB2010-IA); the housings differ, FW1515-PH with 1.5 in. ports against FB2010-PH with 2 in. CaliMar's table rates this one at 1.5 HP maximum continuous load and 5.5 A, and its curve gives about 60 GPM at 50 feet of head.
Can the CaliMar CMAR15VS1.5 sit above or below the water level?
Either. Above the water, CaliMar's guide allows no more than 10 feet, and the strainer pot is filled before the first start. Below it, close the suction and return valves before opening the pot and reopen them before running; a flooded suction system should have gate valves on both pipes, the suction one at least five pipe diameters out, 7.5 inches on 1.5 in. pipe.
How often should I clean the CaliMar CMAR15VS1.5 strainer basket?
Look at it through the see-through lid at least weekly, whatever the filter schedule. To clean it, stop the pump, turn off its breaker and let the water cool, then tap the clamp counter-clockwise to lift the lid. Rinse the basket, replace it if cracked, set its notch on the rib in the volute, fill the pot to the inlet, and keep the lid O-ring clean and lubricated.
Does the CaliMar CMAR15VS1.5 show how much power it uses?
Yes. Pressing the Display button steps through the current speed, the time of day, the time left at that speed and the watts being drawn right now. Pressing a speed or Quick Clean button while it runs starts a temporary override at that button's programmed speed and time, after which the pump drops back into its schedule.
