Product details

The CaliMar CMARVSP1.0 is the 1 HP model, the smallest in CaliMar's CMARVSP variable speed line for inground pools. It takes 230V single phase power at 50 or 60 Hz, runs anywhere from 450 to 3,450 RPM, and has 2 in. suction and discharge ports.

Motor and pump

The motor is a totally enclosed, fan cooled (TEFC) premium efficiency variable speed design. The pump body and strainer pot are molded as one, which CaliMar credits with lower hydraulic noise, and the see-through lid shows how full the basket is. The controller's enclosure is rated IPX6 against rain and UV, the pump is ETL listed for the US and Canada, and ENERGY STAR certifies it with a WEF of 8.2.

Controls

Everything is set at the keypad: the clock, four timed speeds for each day, Quick Clean and the priming speed. Speeds move in 10 RPM steps and run times in 15 minute steps, and the display cycles through speed, time, time left and watts. CaliMar's guide gives this model no automation speed inputs, so an outside timer or relay can turn its power on and off but cannot choose its speed.

Before you buy

At 3,450 RPM, CaliMar's curve puts it at about 60 GPM against 50 feet of head. It draws 5.5 A at 230V, is wired in permanently on a GFCI protected circuit, and CaliMar wants a licensed electrician to do it. The warranty runs one year on materials and workmanship for the first buyer in residential use; commercial use voids it, and labor is not covered.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What wire size does the CaliMar CMARVSP1.0 need?
CaliMar does not name one. Its guide says to size the wire to the National Electrical Code and local rules, going heavier when unsure, and its terminal block takes up to 12 AWG, solid or stranded. The pump draws 5.5 A at 230 V, is hard wired rather than plugged in, and is bonded with solid copper of at least 8 AWG, or 6 AWG in Canada.
How far from the pool should a CaliMar CMARVSP1.0 be installed?
At least 5 feet from the inside wall of the pool or spa, or 9.8 feet in Canada, by CaliMar's guide, and at least 3 feet from a heater outlet. It should sit no more than 10 feet above the water, somewhere ventilated and out of sprinklers and downspouts, with 3 inches clear behind the motor so it can come out for service.
Does the CaliMar CMARVSP1.0 keep the time after a power outage?
For up to a week. The drive holds the clock in memory through an outage of seven days or less. After a longer one, CaliMar's guide says the clock sets itself to the speed 1 start time and the pump runs its schedule from there, so the time has to be set again: unplug it until every panel light is out, then power it back up.
How much water does a CaliMar 1 HP variable speed pump move?
At its full 3,450 RPM, CaliMar's curve for the CMARVSP1.0 gives about 85 GPM against 30 feet of head and about 60 GPM against 50 feet, and the curve meets zero flow near 72 feet. Most of a day is spent slower than that, where flow drops, and the guide also plots the pump at 3,100, 2,500 and 1,500 RPM.
