The Delta Ultraviolet 58-50340 is the 1 in. quartz tube for the E-40, ES-40 and EP-40 UV sanitizers. The UV lamp slides inside it, and the tube keeps the lamp dry in the wet chamber while the ultraviolet light passes through to the water.

Why the tube matters

A UV sanitizer only treats water its light can reach. Scale and film on the outside of the tube block part of that output, which is why Delta calls for pulling the tube and inspecting it every six months. A cracked tube is a bigger problem: it lets water into the dry electrical chamber, where it attacks the electrical components and can trip the GFCI. A tube with cracks should be replaced, not cleaned and reused.

Replacing it safely

Unplug the unit, shut off the circulation pump and confirm the pressure gauge reads zero before loosening the tube's sealing nut, since a tube released under pressure can be forced out of the housing. Let the lamp cool for 30 minutes and lift it out by its ceramic end. Remove the acorn nut, pull the old tube straight up, and seat the rounded end of the new tube gently in the receptor at the bottom of the chamber. Fit a new compression gasket, then tighten the nut without over tightening or cross threading it.

Freezing weather

Ice in the wet chamber can break the quartz tube. If the unit will not run through freezing weather, drain it, or keep water moving through it without interruption at 5 psi or more.

Which Delta UV models does this fit?
The E-40, ES-40 and EP-40. Delta lists 58-50340 as the quartz tube for the E-40 and ES-40, the 110W units that take lamp 70-18440. The smaller 5, 10 and 20 size E and ES models use different tubes, so check the model on the unit label first.
How often should the quartz tube be cleaned?
Delta recommends removing and inspecting it every six months. Clean the outside with vinegar or a weak muriatic acid solution of 4 parts water to 1 part acid, and never use abrasive cleaners. A new or freshly replastered pool can foul the tube faster, so check it more often.
How do I know the tube is cracked?
Water dripping from under the electrical enclosure bonnet, or a GFCI that trips because water has reached the electrical chamber, points to a cracked tube or a failed tube seal. Pull the tube and inspect it, and replace it if you find cracks.
What should I have on hand when I replace it?
A new compression gasket, Delta part 44-02018, which Delta says to fit at every lamp change. When you lift the lamp out, check that its two Viton O-rings, part 44-02221, and the bulb cushion, part 44-02019, are still in place, and handle the lamp by its ceramic end rather than the glass.
