Four cells take the place of a Pentair IntelliChlor IC40. Two are the IC40 itself, under part numbers 520555 and EC-520555, which are one and the same cell. One is the IntelliChlor Plus40, which Pentair describes as the IC40's replacement and builds to the same length. The fourth is a CaliMar cell made to be compatible with it. All four are 40,000 gallon cells, and none of them needs a new power center if the one on the wall still works.

Is the IntelliChlor Plus40 a direct replacement for the IC40?
By its own listing, yes. The Plus40 says it replaces the IC40, is the same length, and works with existing IntelliChlor power centers, so it goes into the gap the old cell leaves. The rating is the same 40,000 gallons. What is new is on the cell itself: an LCD and LED display with more than twenty diagnostics, a redesigned salt sensor, and polarity reversal cleaning, with an acid cleaning kit and stand in the box. A pool with no power center yet needs the EC-520556 as well.
Can I replace an IC40 with an IC60?
The power center does not stand in the way. The IntelliChlor power center we list names the IC20, IC40 and IC60 among the cells it runs, so all three sizes work from one box. The IC60 is the 60,000 gallon cell and suits a pool that has outgrown a 40. What our listings do not state is whether the two bodies are the same length, and that decides whether the plumbing has to move. The one cell that does promise the IC40's length is the Plus40.
What does the CaliMar cell for the IC40 include?
It is listed as compatible with the IntelliChlor IC40 and rated to 40,000 gallons. The cell carries its own flow detector and salinity and temperature sensors, cleans itself by reversing polarity, and has adjustable output with a super chlorination mode. A digital display and LED indicators show its state, including one for a failed cell. Its listing gives an ideal salt level of 3,000 to 4,000 ppm and a one year warranty.
Is an IC40 the right size for my pool?
The 40 is the gallons in thousands, so it is the cell for a pool up to 40,000. The other IntelliChlor sizes we carry step around it: 20,000 with the IC20, 25,000 with the LT25, 30,000 with the Plus30, and 60,000 with the IC60 and Plus60. If your pool sits near the top of a rating, or runs a spa and water features off the same water, the next size up has more in reserve for August.
