Product details

The Pentair IntelliChlor Plus40 is the 2025 salt chlorine generator cell for pools up to 40,000 gallons. It converts ordinary salt into chlorine in the return line, so there is no chlorine to buy, carry or store. It is the direct replacement for the IntelliChlor IC40: the same length, and fully compatible with existing IntelliChlor power centers and Pentair automation, so it drops in with no replumbing.

Modular, and easier to live with

The onboard computer separates from the cell. That means the cell can go into the acid cleaning stand without the electronics coming near the acid, an improvement over earlier units that had to be handled as one piece. It also means sensors and electronics can be replaced individually in the field instead of writing off the whole unit.

Smarter output

SmartSense adjusts chlorine generation when the pump is off or the pool cover is closed, so the cell is not producing chlorine nobody needs, and its life is extended accordingly. A redesigned conductivity sensor gives more accurate salt readings. The LCD/LED display shows real time status, output level and salt level, with more than 20 built in diagnostics and warnings. Regular polarity reversal keeps scale off the plates between manual cleanings, and an acid cleaning kit ships with every unit.

New to salt?

If you are building a system from scratch and do not already have a power center, you will also need the Pentair IntelliChlor Power Center, EC-520556. It runs on 110/220V, includes the power cable, and works with EasyTouch and IntelliTouch automation.

Will this replace my IntelliChlor IC40?
Yes. The Plus40 is the same length as the IC40 and works with the existing IntelliChlor power center, so it drops into the same spot with no replumbing.
Do I need to buy a power center?
Only if you are starting from nothing. An existing IntelliChlor power center runs the Plus40. For a new installation you need the Pentair IntelliChlor Power Center, EC-520556, which is 110/220V, includes the power cable and works with EasyTouch and IntelliTouch automation.
Can I clean the cell without damaging the electronics?
Yes. The onboard computer separates from the cell, so the cell goes into the acid cleaning stand on its own. Earlier models had to be handled as one piece.
What does SmartSense do?
It adjusts chlorine generation automatically, cutting output when the pump is off or the pool cover is closed. Less wasted output means longer cell life.
