The Pentair MasterTemp 400 Natural Gas Pool Heater, EC-462028, is a 400,000 BTU/hr natural gas heater, the largest MasterTemp, with a copper heat exchanger, 84 percent thermal efficiency and hot surface ignition.

Features

Pentair builds the MasterTemp with an advanced ignition control module and flame strength sensor, an LCD display with troubleshooting icons, and a multi-position top panel so the display can be repositioned. It has a rustproof exterior and a compact, quiet design, with digital connectivity to Pentair automation. The heater is certified for low NOx emissions and is CSA certified for outdoor and indoor installation.

Installation specifications

Heat output is 336,000 BTU/hr at 84 percent. The heater runs on 120 or 240 VAC single phase at 60 Hz, comes with the 240 V plug, and has a 3/4 in gas connection and 2 in PVC slip unions for the water side. The cabinet measures 21 in long, 23 in wide and 29 in high, the same as the MasterTemp 250. Pentair's MasterTemp Installation and User's Guide, part number 472592, covers the installation.

Pentair reserves part numbers beginning with EC- for e-commerce sales, and sells the same natural gas MasterTemp 400 through dealers as 460736. This listing is EC-462028. For a smaller pool, the MasterTemp 250 is EC-462026. Pentair lists an optional Smart Heater Bypass valve that diverts water when the heater is not needed, citing up to 35 percent savings in yearly operating cost from lab testing with a 400 heater under specific conditions. What does the SERVICE HEATER light mean on a MasterTemp 400?
On older MasterTemp heaters with indicator lights, SERVICE SYSTEM means not enough water is reaching the heater and SERVICE HEATER means a fault in the heater or its controls, with a row of lights marked AGS, AFS, HLS, PS, THERMISTOR and SFS to show which. Heaters built now show an ERR code on the display instead. Both are explained in our pool heater error code guide.
Is EC-462028 the natural gas or the propane MasterTemp 400?
Natural gas. Pentair builds each MasterTemp 400 for one fuel, and the propane version is a separate part number.
Can the MasterTemp 400 be installed indoors?
It ships set up for outdoor installation, with its venting built in. Pentair sells a vent conversion kit for indoor installations in the US and Canada, and recommends a carbon monoxide detector near any heater installed indoors.
