Matching a cartridge
Cartridges are matched by their FC cross reference number and by the square footage rating, not by eye. Fitting one that is close but not right leaves gaps at the end caps and lets unfiltered water past, so check the FC number against what came out of your housing.
Looking after it
Rinse the cartridge with a hose from the outside in, working the spray down between the pleats. Sunscreen, oils and scale need a proper cartridge cleaner and a soak. Never take a brush to the pleats: it tears the media open and the cartridge quietly stops filtering to its rating while still looking fine.
Buying two
Filter cleaning is much less disruptive with a spare on the shelf. Swap the fresh one in, put the dirty one in the bucket, and the pool never comes offline.
