Choose a variable speed pump by the voltage at your equipment pad and by what will tell it when to change speed, and only then by horsepower. Some of these run on either 115 or 230 volts while others need 230. A pump that keeps its own keypad schedule suits a pad with a plain timer; one with relay inputs, a Hayward OmniX link or Wi-Fi is the pick when an automation panel or a phone should set the speed.

Inground variable speed pumps from Pentair, Hayward, CaliMar, Waterway, Moov and others: the IntelliFlo, WhisperFlo VS and SuperFlo VS, the TriStar VS, MaxFlo VS and Super Pump VS, CaliMar's CMARVSP range and the Waterway Power Defender.
Every make of whole pump is on pool pumps and motors on their own are on pool pump motors. By maker, see Pentair pool pumps, Hayward pool pumps and CaliMar variable speed pumps.
Pool School, before you choose: what size pool pump do I need works out the flow to set, how long to run a pool pump explains why slower and longer uses less energy, and motor or whole pump covers putting a variable speed motor on the pump you already have. How to prime a pool pump covers the first start.
Does the law say a new pool pump motor has to be variable speed?
For most sizes, yes. Under 10 CFR 431.485, a pool pump motor rated 1.15 to 5 total horsepower and made on or after September 29, 2025 must be a variable speed design, and the same applies from September 28, 2027 to motors from 0.5 up to 1.15. Whole pumps fall under a separate federal rule from July 19, 2021, which sets a minimum weighted energy factor for each size class instead of naming a speed.
Can I still get a single speed motor for my old pool pump?
In some sizes, for now. The federal motor rule goes by the date a motor was made. Between 1.15 and 5 total horsepower, anything built on or after September 29, 2025 has to be variable speed, so a single speed in that range is one made before then. From 0.5 up to 1.15, single speed motors can be built until September 28, 2027. Below 0.5, a motor has to reach 69 percent efficiency instead.
Will a variable speed pool pump run on 115 volts?
Some will. Pentair's WhisperFlo VS and VST at 2.6 total horsepower, Hayward's TriStar VS 950 and Moov's 1.2 HP VSP accept either 115 or 230 volts. Others need 230, including Hayward's TriStar VS 1.85 HP and MaxFlo VS 1.65 HP, every CaliMar, Waterway's Power Defender PD-270 and the Moov Ai models. Match the voltage in the pump's title to the circuit at your pad before you order.
Can an automation panel or my phone set a variable speed pump's speed?
It depends on the pump. Pentair's IntelliFlo3 VSF comes with a relay board so a panel can pick its speeds, Hayward's MaxFlo VS 420 is the version made to work with an OmniX controller, and the Moov Ai and AquaStar Pipeline VS pumps add Wi-Fi. A pump with none of those still runs the schedule set on its own keypad, and a plain timer can only switch its power on and off.
Is there a variable speed pump for an above ground pool here?
Not at the moment. Every variable speed pump on this page that has a pool type set is an inground model. Above ground pumps are listed on a page of their own, where the choice is between one speed and two, from Hayward's Power-Flo, Waterway's Hi-Flo and Pentair's Dynamo and OptiFlo lines.
