Armor Shield is a floor pad for above ground pools, cut here for a 15 foot round. It goes down between the vinyl liner and the sand or soil base underneath it.
Why not foam
Armor Shield is a polypropylene geotextile blend rather than the foam padding traditionally used for the job. The point of the weave is resistance to cuts and punctures, so the sharp things that end up in a pool base, rocks, roots, grass and glass, are far less likely to work their way through the liner.
Two things it does besides protection
The pad slows convective heat loss through the floor, and it makes the floor more comfortable to stand on than bare base material. It is installed on the prepared base before the liner, so it belongs in a new build or a liner change rather than a mid season job.
