What buffer does in the test
A hardness titration only works if the sample sits in the right chemical conditions. The buffer puts it there, so that the indicator gives a clear color and the titrant reaches a sharp endpoint you can actually count drops to. Skip it or use a bottle that has gone off and the color change smears across several drops, which is where inconsistent hardness numbers come from.
Handling
Reagents are consumables with a shelf life. Keep the cap on, keep the bottle out of direct sun and out of a hot equipment pad, and replace opened bottles each season. If a result looks wrong, fresh reagent is the cheapest thing to rule out before you start doubting the water.
