What the test tells you
Cyanuric acid is the stabilizer that shields free chlorine from sunlight. Too little and chlorine burns off in a few hours on a bright day. Too much and the same chlorine reads fine on a test strip while doing very little work. The cyanuric acid test is how you tell those two situations apart, which is why it belongs in the routine rather than in the once a season pile.
Keeping readings honest
Reagents age. Store the bottle in a cool dry place out of direct sun, and replace it once a year whether or not it is empty. A drifting reagent is worse than no test, because it looks like an answer.
