Taylor R-0014-A is the phenol red pH indicator solution for the Taylor Residential Series test kits, in a .75 ounce dropper bottle.
How it is used
Phenol red is an indicator dye. Add the specified number of drops to a water sample and the sample takes on a color somewhere between yellow and red, which you match against the comparator block in the kit to read pH. It is the same reagent your kit was supplied with, so the colors line up with the comparator you already have.
Why replacing it matters
Taylor recommends replacing reagents about once a year. Test chemistry ages, and an aged reagent does not stop working in an obvious way. It shifts, and you get a plausible number that is off. Since pH is the reading every other chemical decision is built on, a drifted phenol red quietly costs you money in chemicals and can leave the water out of balance while your test says otherwise.
