The AquaChek 562227 phosphate test kit measures phosphate in pool water from 0 to 1000 parts per billion, with a result in about 60 seconds. There are 20 tests in the bottle and the directions come in English and Spanish.

Why phosphate matters

Phosphate is food for algae. Even a low concentration gives algae something to live on, which is why a pool with good chlorine can still go cloudy or green. Testing tells you whether the problem is sanitizer or nutrient, and that changes what you buy next.

How to use the reading

Test once a week. Phosphate levels can jump after rain, after wind blows leaves and dirt into the water, or after a heavy weekend of swimmers, so one reading in spring does not describe the rest of the season. Note the number each week and watch the direction it moves, not just the single value.
