Why the numbers matter
A cartridge is defined by its dimensions and its media area. Length and diameter decide whether the element seats in the tank, the end cap style and inner diameter decide whether it seals, and the square footage decides how long you go between cleanings. This element carries 194 pleats to reach its 100 square feet, which is what keeps flow up and pressure rise slow.
Cleaning versus replacing
Rinse the element when pressure has climbed roughly 8 to 10 psi over its clean starting point. Over several seasons the fibers pack and the pleats lose their spring, and at that point washing it stops helping. When a freshly cleaned cartridge still starts the cycle high, the element is done.
A note on fit
Measure the old element before ordering. Cartridges of similar diameter come in several lengths and end cap styles, and a wrong end cap will let water bypass the media entirely.
