The Unicel C-8412 is a 120 square foot pleated replacement cartridge. It replaces the Hayward CX1200RE used in the Star Clear Plus, and it is the cartridge for the Waterway Pro Clean 125 and the Waterway Clearwater II 125.
Why the surface area matters
A cartridge filter works by spreading flow across as much media as possible. The pleats are what fit 120 square feet into a tank you can lift. Fit a cartridge with less area, or one that has collapsed pleats, and the same flow is forced through less media, which raises pressure, shortens the run between cleanings and pushes dirt deeper into the fabric.
Cleaning and replacing
Pull the cartridge when the gauge sits roughly 8 to 10 psi above its clean reading. Hose the pleats from the top down so debris washes out rather than in, then soak it in a cartridge cleaner to strip the oils and scale a hose cannot touch. Once cleaning stops bringing the pressure back, or the pleats tear and the end caps loosen, the cartridge is done.
