ZeoFiber is a cellulose fiber filter media used in place of diatomaceous earth, supplied here in a 3 lb bag. It is approved to NSF/ANSI-50 for use in all DE filters.
How it compares to DE
The fibers trap smaller particles than DE does, filtering down to 2 to 4 microns, which is where the polished look in the water comes from. It is also far lighter for the same job: one pound of ZeoFiber replaces eight pounds of DE, so a 3 lb bag goes a long way and takes up almost no shelf space.
Where else it works
In a DE filter it is the media. In sand and cartridge filters it goes in as a filter aid, tightening up what those filters catch and lifting oils they would otherwise pass straight through. Either way it is added directly to the skimmer or the filter with no pre-mixing.
What it is made from
ZeoFiber is produced from wood fiber and is a renewable, fully biodegradable media. Note that the manufacturer copy is not consistent about the exact composition: one description calls it 100 percent pure cellulose fiber, another lists it as a cellulose fiber and zeolite blend.
