Product details

The S.R. Smith 3HR-5-049-MG is a residential 3-bend stair rail, 5 ft long, made from 316L marine grade stainless steel. It is bent from 1.90 in. OD tubing with a .049 in. wall, and each of its bends is formed on a 6 in. radius.

Reading the part number

3HR-5 is the 3-bend rail in the 5 ft length. The -049 marks the .049 in. wall; S.R. Smith also builds the rail with a thicker .065 in. wall. The -MG marks 316L marine grade stainless, where the standard rail is type 304. The same rail is made in seven lengths from 4 ft to 8 ft, so it can be matched to the steps it serves.

For saltwater pools

This is the marine grade version and it is marked salt friendly, so it is the one to choose when the pool runs on salt.

Installation

The rail sets into anchor sockets in the deck, with escutcheon plates finishing the openings at the surface. Anchors and escutcheons are separate parts. S.R. Smith makes both for 1.90 in. OD tubing, including the AS-100B-SS 4 in. residential anchor and the EP-100F round escutcheon.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What does -MG mean in the part number?
Marine grade. S.R. Smith builds the 3-bend rail in type 304 or 316L stainless steel, and -MG marks the 316L marine grade version, which is what this listing is.
Does it come with anchors and escutcheons?
Plan on them as separate parts. The rail sets into anchor sockets in the deck, with escutcheon plates at the deck surface, and S.R. Smith makes both for 1.90 in. OD tubing, for example the AS-100B-SS 4 in. residential anchor and the EP-100F round escutcheon.
Can I use it on a saltwater pool?
Yes. It is the 316L marine grade version and is marked salt friendly, which makes it the version of this rail suited to salt water.
How do I know the 5 ft length is right?
Measure the rail you are replacing, or the stair run it has to cover, before ordering. S.R. Smith makes this rail in 4, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7 and 8 ft lengths, and this is the 5 ft size.
