What the test tells you
A pH reading says where the water is. It does not say how much acid it will take to get where you want, because that depends on how strongly the water resists the change. The acid demand test answers the second question, so you can add the right amount once rather than chasing pH down in steps and overshooting.
Keeping results honest
Reagents do not last forever. Taylor advises replacing them about once a year, and a kit giving readings that no longer match the pool is usually running on tired reagent rather than a broken pool.
