Product details
This is a 25 lb bag of white diatomaceous earth, the filter media added to DE pool filters. It is the powder, not the filter.
How a DE filter uses it
DE filters do not filter with their grids. The grids are a frame, and the diatomaceous earth coating laid over them is what traps debris. That coating filters down to a finer particle than sand or a cartridge can manage, which is why DE pools tend to look sharper than the rest.
Recharging
The coating leaves with the backwash water. After every backwash, the DE has to be replaced by mixing the measured amount with water and pouring it slowly into the skimmer while the pump runs. Skip it and the filter runs with bare grids, passing debris and wearing the fabric out early.
Getting the amount right
The amount your filter takes is set by its size, so go by the figure on the filter label or in the manual. A measuring scoop makes it repeatable rather than a guess.
