How much you need
Sand filters are charged by weight, and the figure is specific to the tank. Check the label on your filter or the manual for the required pounds of sand, then order the number of bags that covers it. Underfilling leaves the laterals exposed and overfilling crowds the valve.
When to change the bed
Sand does its work by presenting sharp edges to the water. Over years those edges round off, oils and scale bind grains together, and the water starts to channel through the same paths instead of filtering evenly. When a filter no longer clears the pool at normal pressure and a backwash does not fix it, the bed has reached the end of its life.
