Product details

The SmartPool PoolEye PE12 is an alarm for steel-walled above ground pools up to 24 ft round or 16 x 32 ft oval. A sensor tube in the water watches for waves below the surface and sets off a poolside siren when something weighing 15 lb or more goes in.

How it detects

Because the PE12 reads subsurface waves rather than surface movement, wind, rain and floating toys do not trigger it. Sensitivity is set with a High and Low switch on the sensor, High from the factory, and a deflector shield is included for pools where return flow sets it off. Aim the return eyeball downward and keep the water near the minimum water level line on the sensor tube: water that is too low can cause constant alarms, and water that is too high can keep it from sounding.

Installation

The alarm slides onto the top rail at the center of a wall section and must hang vertically. Its bracket fits guide rails up to 3/4 in. wide, or up to 1.2 in. after adjustment. The siren mounts on the outside of the nearest upright with the included screws or double-sided tape; never drill into the pool wall. On a round pool, place it where it is closest to all points of the pool, and on an oval, mount it at the middle of a long side.

Operation and safety

The siren runs on 4 AA batteries. Press the test button each time the alarm is turned on, test the full alarm weekly with a dropped bucket, and change the batteries at least once a swim season. The PoolEye is an aid, not a substitute for adult supervision, and SmartPool recommends a barrier fence with a gate or door alarm around the pool. It carries a six month limited warranty.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Will wind or rain set it off?
It is designed not to. The PoolEye watches for waves below the surface, so surface disturbances such as wind, rain and floating toys are ignored. A pool return aimed up at the surface can cause false alarms, so point the return eyeball downward, and use the Low sensitivity setting or the included deflector shield if return flow still trips it.
How do I test it?
With the water calm and the alarm on, fill a 5 gallon bucket about a third full and drop it into the pool from about 6 in. up. The siren should sound when the wave reaches the sensor. SmartPool says to test the full alarm every week and to press the test button every time you turn it on.
Does it replace watching children in the pool?
No. SmartPool states it is not a lifesaving device and does not replace adult supervision. It is one layer of protection alongside a barrier fence with a gate or door alarm, swimming lessons and CPR knowledge.
What do I do in winter?
Take the alarm out whenever the water temperature could fall below freezing. Slide it off the top rail, remove the siren from the upright and store everything somewhere that stays above freezing.
