What the canister does
Everything the robot picks up ends up here. The canister is the basket the cleaner pulls water through, so it handles every load of leaves, sand and fine grit the pool has to offer, then has to hold that load while the cleaner is lifted dripping out of the water.
When it needs replacing
Cleaning restores flow through a dirty canister, but it does nothing for a cracked housing or a frame that has warped enough that the canister no longer seats. Once that happens, water and debris take the easy path around the filter, and the pool stays dirty while the cleaner runs its full cycle. Debris spilling back out as you lift the unit is the other clear sign.
