Product details

Activate is a recycled glass filter media that replaces silica sand in a pool sand filter. This is the Fine, Grade 1, in a 25 lb bag, Maytronics part A999008.

What it does that sand cannot

The activation process gives the glass around 300 times the surface area of sand, which is how it filters down to 4 to 5 microns. The surface is negatively charged, so it draws in and holds bacteria and algae, and it is self sterilizing, so what it catches does not reproduce into biofilm. Since most biofilm forms inside the filter, keeping it out of the bed keeps the filter working and the water easier to treat, with lower chemical consumption and less maintenance.

Layering

Activate comes in two grades. Coarse Grade 2 goes in the bottom of the filter and Fine Grade 1 is laid over the top. Fill the filter following the sand filter manufacturer's instructions, then backwash three times before returning to normal filtration.

How it is made

The glass is recycled, then decontaminated, sterilized, shaped and activated through a patented process at a plant in Scotland. It arrives in a sealed bag, ready to use.

Do I use Fine on its own?
Activate is laid in two grades. Coarse Grade 2 goes in the bottom of the filter and Fine Grade 1 goes over it as the top layer. This bag is the Fine; the Coarse is sold separately.
How much do I need?
Start from your sand filter manufacturer's fill instructions and follow the Activate layering guidance for the split between Coarse and Fine. Both grades come in 25 lb bags.
Why glass instead of sand?
It filters down to 4 to 5 microns, it is negatively charged so it captures bacteria and algae, and its surface is self sterilizing so biofilm does not build up in the filter. That means lower chemical use and less maintenance.
What do I do after loading the filter?
Backwash three times before putting the pool back into normal filtration.
