Maytronics Activate 25 lbs Glass Filter Media, Fine

Activate is a recycled glass filter media that replaces silica sand in a pool sand filter. This is the Fine, Grade 1, in a 25 lb bag, Maytronics part A999008.

What it does that sand cannot

The activation process gives the glass around 300 times the surface area of sand, which is how it filters down to 4 to 5 microns. The surface is negatively charged, so it draws in and holds bacteria and algae, and it is self sterilizing, so what it catches does not reproduce into biofilm. Since most biofilm forms inside the filter, keeping it out of the bed keeps the filter working and the water easier to treat, with lower chemical consumption and less maintenance.

Layering

Activate comes in two grades. Coarse Grade 2 goes in the bottom of the filter and Fine Grade 1 is laid over the top. Fill the filter following the sand filter manufacturer's instructions, then backwash three times before returning to normal filtration.

How it is made

The glass is recycled, then decontaminated, sterilized, shaped and activated through a patented process at a plant in Scotland. It arrives in a sealed bag, ready to use.
