The S.R. Smith MER-1001S-MG is a single Meridian Series pool hand rail in 316L marine grade stainless steel, made from 1.90 in. OD tubing with a .065 in. wall and designed to retrofit into an existing Figure 4 rail setting.

What it is

The Meridian Series is S.R. Smith's decorative rail line, suited to pools where deck space is tight. S.R. Smith builds it in 304 stainless or 316L marine grade stainless, and the -MG suffix marks the 316L version. This listing is one rail; for both sides of an entry, the pair is MER-1001-MG.

Fit and replacement

Because the rail is designed for an existing Figure 4 setting, replacing an old Figure 4 rail is a swap: loosen the wedge in each anchor, lift the old rail out, set the Meridian rail in and tighten the wedges. The anchors must be made for 1.90 in. OD tube. For new anchors, S.R. Smith recommends its AS-100B 4 in. bronze anchor, AS-100B-SS 4 in. 304 stainless steel residential anchor or AS-100P universal plastic anchor, finished with the EP-100F round escutcheon.

Before you order

New anchors in an existing deck go into a core drilled hole at least 4 in. across for bronze or stainless, or 5 in. for the universal anchor, and at least 1/2 in. deeper than the anchor. Each anchor is set flush with the deck, wedge facing away from the pool, bonded to the deck rebar per the NEC or local code, and held in epoxy or cement of at least 3,000 PSI. 316L is the more corrosion resistant of the two stainless grades, which is why marine grade rails are the usual pick around salt pools.

Will the Meridian rail fit my existing Figure 4 rail anchors?
S.R. Smith designed the Meridian Series hand rail to retrofit into an existing Figure 4 setting, so MER-1001S-MG is meant to go into the anchors a Figure 4 rail came out of. The anchors must be sized for 1.90 in. OD tube.
