Where the small grid sits
A DE element pack is not a set of identical grids. Most 48 sq ft filters use several full width grids plus one narrower partial grid to fill out the circle inside the tank. This is that narrower one, so count what you are replacing before ordering rather than assuming every grid in the pack is the same.
Why a torn grid ruins the water
The grid itself does not filter. The layer of DE powder held against its fabric does. Once the fabric splits, powder blows straight through into the pool and the water stays cloudy however carefully you charge the filter. Owners often chase chemistry for weeks before opening the tank.
