How it is built
Unicel rectangular grids use a reinforced center core, which is what stops the grid from folding under the pressure of a loaded filter. The core is covered in polypropylene cloth that resists mildew and rot, and the seams are stitched with chemical resistant heavy duty string and then sonic welded so they will not fray in service.
When to replace
A grid that is torn, worn thin, split at a seam or bent at the core will pass DE straight into the pool. The giveaway is a dusting of powder on the floor after every recharge. Measure the old grid and check the port position before you order, since a DE filter takes a set of grids in more than one size.
