Why the lamp is a service item
An ultraviolet sanitizer works on the light output of the lamp inside it. That output drops steadily with running hours, so a lamp can still glow while doing far less than it did when new. Manufacturers set a replacement interval for that reason, and changing the lamp on schedule is what keeps the unit doing its job.
While the unit is open
Look at the quartz sleeve at the same time. Scale or film on the sleeve blocks the same light a tired lamp fails to produce. Fit the new lamp with clean gloves or a cloth so that skin oils do not end up on the glass.
