Fitting it
The cartridge drops into the tank in place of the element coming out. Nothing else changes, so it is a straight swap once the tank is open.
Cleaning against replacing
A cartridge is cleaned several times over its life, but every cleaning leaves a little of the pleat behind. When a proper wash no longer brings the clean starting pressure back down, or when the pleats are torn or matted flat, the element has given what it has and a new one goes back in.
