Size and fit
The element measures 8-11/16 inches across the outside and is open at both ends, with twelve concentric slots. Those numbers matter more than the square footage when you are matching a cartridge, because a filter that takes a 50 sq ft element will not accept one built to a different diameter or end cap pattern.
When to change it
A cartridge is a wear item. Rinse and soak it on your normal schedule, and watch for the point where a cleaning no longer brings the pressure back down. Grey pleats that stay grey, thin or torn fabric and loose end caps all say the same thing, which is that the element is finished and a new one will do more for flow than another afternoon with a hose.
