What the diffuser does
Water arriving at a cartridge tank comes in fast and in one place. The inlet diffuser spreads that flow around the tank so it does not drive straight into one face of the element. Without it, the cartridge takes the full jet in a single spot, wears through there first, and starts channeling water past the media instead of through it.
The locking tab
The tab keeps the diffuser seated where it belongs. It is worth a look every time the filter is opened for a clean, because a broken tab lets the diffuser move around inside the tank and the uneven cartridge wear follows soon after.
