Why the sweep shape
A sweep elbow turns the water through a long radius instead of a sharp corner. Every fitting at the pad costs a little pressure, and on a filter inlet or outlet that cost is paid continuously while the pump runs. The sweep keeps that loss down, which is why Jandy specifies it rather than a standard 90 in these positions.
The plug
The 1/2 inch plug is part of the assembly. It closes the port when nothing is teed off it, and comes out when a gauge, a bleeder or a chemical feed line is added.
