Product details

A Solar Sun Ring is a section of solar cover you handle by hand. This one is the blue sunburst version, 5 feet across, with a 60 inch outer tube that keeps it rigid and floating flat on the water.

How it warms the pool

The top layer absorbs sunlight and turns it into heat, which passes into the water underneath. The ring also acts as a lid: it slows evaporation through the day and holds warmth in through the night, which is where an uncovered pool loses most of what the sun gave it. The gain is real but modest, so treat rings as a way to stretch the swimming season rather than as a substitute for a heater.

Coverage and handling

Plan on covering at least 60 percent of the water surface for useful heating. Because the pool is covered in pieces rather than one sheet, you can pull a few rings, swim, and put them back without a reel. Grommets in the top let rain and splash water drain through so the rings keep floating, and they wipe clean and stack for storage at the end of the season.

How many rings do I need for my pool?
Work to at least 60 percent of the water surface. Take your pool surface area, take 60 percent of it, and divide by the area of a 5 foot ring to get a starting count.
Do they sink when it rains?
No. There are drainage grommets in the top of the ring, so water seeps through rather than pooling on top and pulling the ring under.
Does this one include a water anchor?
No. This is the sunburst ring on its own. A plain blue ring supplied with a water anchor is a separate item.
Will this heat as well as a solar heating system?
No. Rings are a low cost way to gain some solar heat and hold it in, not a replacement for a dedicated solar heating system.
