The PoolTux WTB-1019 is a 4 foot by 8 foot equalizer pillow for use under an in ground pool winter cover.
What it is there for
Water expands when it freezes, and a covered pool full of ice pushes outward on everything around it. The pillow gives that expansion somewhere to go. Set in the water beneath the cover, it compresses as the ice grows and keeps the load off the pool structure.
Using it
Float the pillow near the center of the pool before the cover goes on. Inflate it to about three quarters rather than firm, so it still has room to squash. A side benefit is the shape it gives the cover, which helps rain and melt run to the edges instead of pooling in the middle.
