Solid versus mesh
A solid cover is a barrier. No light gets through it, so algae has nothing to work with over the winter, and no leaves, dirt or runoff reach the water. The trade off is that everything which lands on the cover stays on the cover, which is why a solid cover is always paired with a cover pump.
Through the off season
Keep the surface pumped clear and the cover does the rest, holding the water dark and clean until opening. Because the water underneath stays untouched, spring startup is usually a matter of clearing the cover, pulling it off and starting the equipment rather than fighting a green pool.
