The Taylor K-2006 is the complete FAS-DPD test kit for chlorine pools and spas, listed here as K-2006-6. It covers total alkalinity, free chlorine, combined chlorine, cyanuric acid, calcium hardness and pH in one case.

Why FAS-DPD

Most inexpensive kits ask you to match a color against a printed block, which gets you a rough band and no more. FAS-DPD works by titration: you add a reagent drop at a time and count until the sample changes color. The count is the reading. That gives an actual number, resolves high chlorine levels that color matching cannot, and removes the guesswork of judging shades under poolside light.

Free and combined chlorine

The kit reads both separately, and that distinction drives most chlorine decisions. Free chlorine is the sanitizer still available to work. Combined chlorine is what has already reacted with contaminants and is spent. A pool with plenty of total chlorine but a high combined reading is a pool that needs shocking, and no strip will tell you that.

What does this kit test for?
Total alkalinity, free chlorine, combined chlorine, cyanuric acid, calcium hardness and pH.
What makes FAS-DPD better than test strips?
FAS-DPD is a titration. You add drops and count them, so the result is a number rather than a color you are trying to match by eye. It also reads high chlorine levels that strips and comparator blocks cannot resolve.
Why does combined chlorine matter?
Combined chlorine is sanitizer that has already reacted and is no longer doing useful work. Seeing it separately from free chlorine is what tells you the pool needs shocking rather than more of the same.
