Why FAS-DPD
Most inexpensive kits ask you to match a color against a printed block, which gets you a rough band and no more. FAS-DPD works by titration: you add a reagent drop at a time and count until the sample changes color. The count is the reading. That gives an actual number, resolves high chlorine levels that color matching cannot, and removes the guesswork of judging shades under poolside light.
Free and combined chlorine
The kit reads both separately, and that distinction drives most chlorine decisions. Free chlorine is the sanitizer still available to work. Combined chlorine is what has already reacted with contaminants and is spent. A pool with plenty of total chlorine but a high combined reading is a pool that needs shocking, and no strip will tell you that.
