Product details

The Taylor K-1766 is a drop test kit for measuring chloride, the salt content of pool water. It is the test you use to confirm that a salt chlorinated pool is sitting in the range its chlorine generator wants.

How it is used

You take a measured sample, add the reagent a drop at a time while swirling, and count drops until the color changes. The count converts to a salt reading. It takes a couple of minutes and it does not need calibration, batteries or a meter.

Why test salt separately

Most salt systems show a salt number on the panel, but that figure comes from the cell and can drift as the cell ages or scales. Rain, splash out and fresh fill water all move the real level. Checking with reagents gives you an independent answer before you decide whether to add salt or leave it alone.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What does this kit test for?
Chloride, which is how a salt level is measured. It is the test for a salt chlorinated pool.
How does a drop test work?
You take a measured water sample, add reagent one drop at a time while swirling, and count the drops until the sample changes color. The drop count converts to a salt reading.
Why not just read the salt cell display?
A cell display is a convenience reading and can drift as the cell ages. A reagent test gives you an independent number to check it against.
Are refills available?
Yes. Taylor sells its reagents individually, so you can top the kit up rather than buying a whole new one.
