The Pentair R151226 is the number 79 specialty test kit, made to measure cyanuric acid. It comes with 8 oz of reagent and a test vial designed to give a positive readout, packed in a styrene box with a clear top and instructions.

Why test cyanuric acid

Cyanuric acid is the stabilizer that protects free chlorine from ultraviolet light. Without it, an outdoor pool can lose most of its chlorine in a single sunny day. With too much of it, the chlorine that remains reacts more slowly and the pool needs a higher reading to hold the same sanitizing power. Neither problem shows up on a normal chlorine test, which is why stabilizer gets its own kit.

How the test works

The reagent reacts with cyanuric acid to cloud the sample, and the degree of cloudiness is proportional to the concentration. That is why the kit is listed under both cyanuric acid and turbidity, and why the vial is shaped for a clear cut reading rather than a guess.

When to use it

Check stabilizer at opening, after any addition of stabilized chlorine, and after heavy rain or a large water replacement. Cyanuric acid does not break down on its own, so the only way the level comes down is by diluting the pool.
