Why it fails
The bearing sits in the wheel hub, underwater, in the dirtiest part of the pool. Fine sand works past the seal and grinds away at it, and the wheel that used to spin with a flick of a finger starts to feel notchy and then locks up. The cleaner keeps trying to drive, so what the owner sees is a machine that pulls to one side, misses whole sections of floor or gives up halfway up the wall.
Checking and replacing
Take the wheel off and spin the bearing by hand. Any roughness, drag or side to side play means it is done. Bearings on one cleaner have all logged the same hours, so if one has failed it is worth checking the rest while the machine is apart.
